Death by pork bun
This morning I was in the kitchen at work, making myself a standard cup of tea, and there was a young woman in there microwaving a Chinese pork bun in five-second bursts, and after each burst she waited for the oven to emit its programmed five beeps before opening the door, prodding it, and setting it for another five seconds.
Cooking time: 50 seconds.
Beeping time: 30 seconds.
Prodding time: 20 seconds.
Apparent time: 3 years.

There should be things to do while waiting for machines to ping. Studies should be done like this.

She could have taken your example and made a cup of tea.
No matter what I’m cooking, I tend to stop just before the ping. I figure the second less cooking time won’t kill me, but smashing the microwave because the ping annoys me may.
