Light Choices

I managed to sneak a menu out of the “fine dining” restaurant from yesterday, which is the only restaurant in town apart from the golf club (purveyor of cold donair), because I think it is a thing of complicated beauty. The menu is divided into seven sections, or movements, as I prefer to think of them: ‘Soups’, ‘Salads’, ‘Light Choices’, ‘Side Orders’, ‘Appetizers’, ‘Pastas’, and ‘Other Specialities’. My favrourite salad is the ‘Chef’s Salad’, which is “loaded with turkey, ham, corned beef, cheese, tomato, and served with garlic toast”. I go a long way for a good corned beef salad. One of the ‘Other Specialities’ is ‘Steak Sandwich’. But the capricious charm of the thing is best evidenced by my quotation, verbatim, from the ‘Light Choices’ section:

Chicken Fingers………………………………………………………………………………….6.95
(served with fries & dipping sauce)
Fish & Chips (Atlantic Cod)……………………………………………………………….7.95
Clubhouse Sandwich………………………………………………………………………..6.95
(served with fries) [but no dipping sauce]
Chicken Club……………………………………………………………………………………….7.50
(grilled chicken breast on Kaiser bun with
bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato & Mayo [sic])
Great Canadian Burger…………………………………………………………………….7.50
(½ lb. patty on Kaiser bun with bacon,
cheddar cheese & mushrooms & fries)
Hamburger & Fries…………………………………………………………………………….4.95

I like the look of the Great Canadian Burger, but of course it’s only a light choice; so I’ll order three. But seriously, standards are different here: the inclusion of the word “lettuce” is enough to render a menu ‘light’.

But that was last night. Tonight there are no such hi-jinks, and only dark choices. Tonight I’m in a motel room, eating from a microwave, drinking wine from a plastic cup and blogging.

Chicken fingers? What genetic freakery is this?

Sort of like buffalo wings, I think

Buffalos have wings? What, like, from Bodyform?

(I steal menus too, usually so I can take them home and re-create things on them much easier and cheaper for the Beachhutman cookbook. I hate it when those Mexican restaurants have wierd shaped menus you can’t stick under your jacket)

why is a small-town-BC restaurant serving atlantic cod? couldn’t fish anything out of the closer ocean?

Norah / disgruntled: these must be the frankenstein foods we have heard so much about.

Bhm: you mean those menus shaped like saguaro cacti?

O: a good question and one with an easy answer: “atlantic cod” is what it says on the packet.

Yeah, or hats. You’d think the buggers would make them easier to conceal about your person.

It’s a bugger getting used to all these different blog sites. There was meant to be a pargraph or break in that last entry & no edit option.
